A city that since 2005 has the status of cultural heritage, becoming part of UNESCO. It is one of the remaining examples in the Balkans of Ottoman-style trading towns. Alongside ancient Gjirokastra, another Gjirokastra is developing – the modern one, in the lower part of the city, with new constructions.
