Apollonia is located 12 kilometers away from the city of Fier. Apollonia, as a city, was founded in the beginning of the 7th century BC on the lands of the Illyrian Taulantii by Greek colonists coming from Corinth. The earliest records of their presence are documented around 620 BC. The city was named in honor of the deity Apollo. Among the 24 cities throughout the Mediterranean world that held this name in Antiquity, Apollonia of Illyria was the most significant and played a major role as a trading intermediary between the Greeks and the Illyrians. Apollonia was a large and important city at that time, situated near the Aoos River (Vjosë). It is estimated that the city had around 60,000 inhabitants, a remarkable number for the Antiquity period!
