Antigonea was founded by Pyrrhus, the king of Epirus, in the year 295 BC. The Molossians were one of the three tribes of Epirus (in the southern part of present-day Albania and the northern region of Greece), which developed into a strong state during this period. Antigonea grew as a significant economic, social, cultural, and political center. By the end of the 3rd century and the beginning of the 2nd century BC, it took the form of a “polis” (city-state) and became one of the most important places of antiquity.
